The History

In around 1850, construction work started on a luxurious holiday villa on the banks of the Lake for an aristocratic family from Bergamo.

In 1872 the villa, which is in pure neoclassical style, was sold and since then it has formed the central nucleus of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni which was opened in 1873. Its interior reflects the good taste loved by the wealthy nobility of the time.

The Grand Hotel became the chosen destination for illustrious guests in search of peace: the Sovereigns of Spain, Romania, Albania, Egypt; above all the Russian and English aristocracy; Winston Churchill, Roosevelt, the Rothschilds, J.F. Kennedy; Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Maria Schell, Clark Gable, Robert Mitchum, Al Pacino.... these are just some of the famous guests who have strolled through the rooms and lakeside gardens of the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni, enjoying its beauty and outstanding hospitality.

In 1918, Swiss businessman Arturo Bucher bought the elegant Hotel. Last year, the current owner Gianfranco Bucher, successor to Arturo and Rudy, took great satisfaction in celebrating the family's 100 years and three generations in charge of the Hotel.

The Location Today

Set in the splendid surroundings of Lake Como, where the blue waters meet the green mountains which soar above the lake, the Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni enjoys a breathtaking position on the promontory which juts halfway out into the lake, separating the two branches.

The luxurious vegetation of its Italian-style gardens, abounding in Mediterranean and subtropical plants, flourishes in the pleasant microclimate around the lake: sunshine almost all year round, accompanied by mild temperatures in every season.

The interior of the Villa reflects the good taste loved by the wealthy nobility of the time: its walls and ceilings are adorned with frescoes and paintings of mythological scenes, gilded frames, festoons, temples, putti, flamingos, and Pompeian reds. The coffer ceilings are often frescoed with floral patterns in grey and pink tones.

The guests are fascinated by the period wall coverings in French style, the antique Persian carpets, the crystal chandeliers from Murano, the Imperial furniture, and the neo-classical and Art Nouveau style; not to mention the marble staircases, the stucco work columns, and the splendid trompe l'oeil.

The Royal Hall alone is a genuine monument to art, which in the evening is lit by bronze and crystal chandeliers, the splendour of whose lights are reflected by large mirrors. It's the only historic space in all Lake Como able to host till 220 people for a dining service.

Bellagio, Lake Como - Italy

The Medieval Town

Holidays in Bellagio date back to ancient history. The first person to leave a record of his stays in this spot was Pliny the Younger in the first century A.D. He owned two villas on the lake where he combined studying and writing with hunting and fishing.

Over the centuries, the strategic position at the centre of the lake made Bellagio important enough to be the object of contention many times.

In the 19th century, Bellagio became a court of considerable importance despite the fact that it was very difficult to reach the town in any way other than by crossing the lake. During the Belle Èpoque, the town offered three working theatres, at a time when Milan could only boast two.

The Current Holiday Destination

Despite being close to the mountains, Bellagio has the fortune of a Mediterranean climate that has encouraged the growth of olive trees and gives life to the great spring blooms of azaleas that attract fans of flowers from all over the world.

The Bellagio area is also ideal for sports holidays. On the lake you can practice sailing, water skiing, kayaking and rowing, while trekking and cycling routes wind through the promontory, with breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

For those who prefer shopping to sports activities, there are numerous boutiques, small shops and craft shops where tradition blends with the culture of the place.

2022 Season: What's New

The tennis court renovations

We modernized our tennis court with hi-tech, more resistant synthetic grass fibers; it's immersed in nature and located at the top of our gardens, reachable through a panoramic pathway.

New Italian beauty brand in our Spa

We fell in love with the textures and fragrances of a natural, 100% made in Italy brand and decided to include it in our Spa: visit our wellness center to discover more about the treatments and the beauty line.
